Leading law firm, Collyer Bristow, has appointed James Austen as a Partner in the Tax and Estate Planning team.

James has extensive experience acting for high net worth individuals, entrepreneurs and business owners. He has particular expertise in advising business owners and the owners of rural estates on succession and or exit planning and the applicable tax reliefs. A significant part of his practice is advising in the context of contentious and semi-contentious situations, including tax and domicile enquiries and trust disputes. James joins the firm from Charles Russell Speechlys.

In addition to his practice, James sits part time as a Judge in the Tax Tribunal, hearing and determining appeals against decisions by HMRC in respect of both direct and indirect taxes.

The appointment of James continues the growth of the Tax and estate planning team, led by Partner and Head of Private Wealth, Peter Daniel, and follows the promotion of James Cook to Partner in May 2019. The team is well known for advising clients both nationally and internationally on tax and succession planning for both individuals and families as they manage their international affairs. James’ specialist expertise in tax disputes broadens and enhances the team’s capability to advise clients in this area. His appointment takes the number of Partners in the team to five.

James Austen, Partner at Collyer Bristow, said:

“I am thrilled to join Collyer Bristow’s Private Wealth group. It is a well-established practice and an industry leader. I look forward to building on the firm’s expertise and growing my practice in such a highly-regarded firm.”

Peter Daniel, Partner and Head of Private Wealth, commented:

“It is a pleasure to welcome James to the Tax and estate planning team, where he will be a valuable addition. James’s extensive skillset will increase our ability to meet client needs across the team. He has a wealth of experience to bring to bear, as we continue to grow and develop our market-leading service in Private Wealth.”
