Choosing where to start your legal career matters. At Collyer Bristow, you will join a firm that combines long-standing expertise with a forward-thinking approach to modern legal practice. Our traditionally modern ethos means you benefit from the strength, stability and high standards that come from our heritage, while developing the skills needed to succeed in a rapidly evolving legal market. From day one of your training contract, you will work alongside experienced lawyers, build meaningful client relationships, and develop the confidence and capability to shape your own future in law.

What you can expect

We encourage our trainees to get exposure to both contentious and non-contentious work throughout their two-year training contract, but we do not have any mandatory seat requirements.

You will spend six months in four practice areas, working with a range of people from senior partners to more recently qualified associates.

We have a mentoring and performance coaching programme, training and regular feedback conversations which nurture the development of your technical capability and client advisory skills.

You will be encouraged from an early stage to take responsibility for your own files and participate in managing the client’s work. You will also be given opportunities to start developing your BD and networking skills.

Our expectations of you

We believe our people are key to achieving our strategic ambitions. Our expectation framework provides trainees with clear performance insights and a transparent guide to the skills and attributes that they are expected to achieve during the training contract.  It supports personal growth by helping identify development areas and preparing for future responsibilities. Designed to ensure consistency, quality and accountability, this framework empowers trainees to take ownership of their careers and progress with confidence. You can download a copy of our Trainee Expectations Framework here.
