What do neuroscientists, tech entrepreneurs, best-selling authors, and international songwriters have in common? They are all recent Collyer Bristow clients taking advantage of the UK’s Global Talent visa, one of the country’s most attractive immigration categories.
Background and process
Launched in 2020, the Global Talent visa is designed to attract the world’s leading minds – and rising stars – across a wide range of disciplines to live and work in the UK. After a relatively modest start, the scheme has gained significant momentum, particularly as other immigration routes have tightened or closed. Increasingly, talented individuals are turning to this route for the freedom and recognition it offers.
The process itself is relatively simple. Stage 1 involves applying for an endorsement from a body appointed by the Home Office to assess the applicant’s credentials and standing within their field. Stage 2 is the visa application itself, which can be granted for a period of up to 5 years. Notably, winners of certain prestigious awards can bypass the endorsement stage altogether.
Benefits of the visa
The appeal of the Global Talent visa lies in the flexibility and freedom it gives to successful applicants. There’s no requirement to work a set number of hours, earn a minimum salary, or establish a company in the UK. Nor is there any need to take an English language test before applying – a rarity compared with many other routes.
Under the current rules, securing permanent residence in the UK – known as ‘indefinite leave to remain’ (ILR) – with a Global Talent visa is easier (and quicker) than with other immigration categories. After as little as 3 years in the UK, visa holders can apply for ILR if they have earned money in the UK in the field in which they were originally endorsed at stage 1.
Even if ILR is not an option, Global Talent visa holders have the option of extending their visas indefinitely, as long as their endorsement remains valid and has not been withdrawn.
Future leaders
The Global Talent visa is not limited to established professionals. Individuals at the start of their careers can also apply, under the ‘exceptional promise’ category. This route is designed for those who can demonstrate strong potential to become leaders in their field, and who are typically in the first 5 years of their career. Successful applicants can enjoy the same flexibility and access to the UK as established professionals who are endorsed for their ‘exceptional talent’.
Comment
Applications for Global Talent visas have surged in recent years, and this upward trend is set to continue. While other countries have increased their visa costs – for example the USA has recently introduced a staggering $100,000 fee for its H-1B work visa (see our article here) – fees for the UK Global Talent visa remain modest. Rumours that the Home Office might reduce these costs even further – as well as increasing the number of eligible disciplines – only add to the route’s appeal.
The visa also offers notable tax benefits. Under the new UK’s new ‘Foreign Income and Gains’ regime, qualifying new arrivals can be exempt from UK tax on their overseas income and gains for the first four years of residence in the UK. This can be a significant advantage, offering a softer financial landing for new residents.
The Global Talent visa is one of the UK’s most attractive immigration routes for exceptional individuals across a range of industries. With straightforward application stages, accessible pathways to permanent residence, and appealing tax benefits, it is an increasingly popular choice for the world’s brightest talents looking to build their future in the UK.
Collyer Bristow continue to support Global Talent candidates across diverse eligible disciplines. To find out if you are eligible, or to discuss the route in general, please get in touch with Charlie Fowler using the details on this page.
