What happens during a Training Contract?

We encourage our trainees to get exposure to both contentious and non-contentious work throughout their training contract, but we do not have any mandatory seat requirements. You will spend six months in four practice areas, working with a range of people from senior partners to more recently qualified solicitors. We have a mentoring and performance coaching programme, training and regular feedback conversations which nurture the development of your technical capability and client advisory skills.

You will be encouraged from an early stage to take responsibility for your own files and participate in managing the client’s work. You will also be given opportunities to start developing your BD and networking skills.

What is expected of a Trainee?

We believe our people are key to achieving our strategic goals. Our expectation framework provides trainees with clear performance insights and a transparent guide to the skills and attributes that they are expected to achieve during the training contract. It supports personal growth by helping identify development areas and preparing for future responsibilities. Designed to ensure consistency, quality and accountability, this framework empowers trainees to take ownership of their careers and progress with confidence.

Who is Collyer Bristow looking for?

We pride ourselves on our collegiate and inclusive culture, and within this friendly environment our people benefit from working on a wide range of exciting, technically challenging and high value work for our clients.

We are strong believers in supporting the whole person, so everyone can bring their authentic self to work.  Supporting our people’s wellbeing is very important to us.  Our wellbeing programme features regular speakers on key topics and access to various support networks to support our people’s financial, physical and mental wellbeing. We also provide access to subsidised back up child and eldercare and an extensive parental leave coaching programme. This is underpinned by our hybrid working policy; we encourage people to spend most of their time collaborating with clients and colleagues in our offices whilst benefitting from time working from home (a minimum 60% office based).

For both intakes we will be accepting candidates who will be qualifying under the SQE route.

When does the Training Contract begin?

Assessment days will take place at the end of July/beginning of August 2025.

Our 2026 traineeships will be confirmed one year in advance of their start date and our 2027 traineeships will be confirmed two years in advance of their start date.
