Isobel is an associate in our trusts, tax and estate planning team. She advises high-net-worth individuals, family offices and trustees based in the UK and internationally.  Isobel works on a broad range of matters including pre-immigration planning, residency and domicile rules, international tax planning and UK wills and estate planning.  Much of her work has an international focus and she regularly advises on cross border taxation, including for individuals with UK/US interests.

Isobel regularly advises clients on their tax reporting obligations and assists with HMRC enquiries into individual and trust tax returns.  She has experience advising clients in contentious tax disputes, including appealing to the First-tier Tribunal (Tax Chamber).

Isobel trained at the firm and qualified in 2023.  Isobel studied Law at Durham University graduating in 2017.

ADVISING ON PRIVATE PRINCIPAL RESIDENCE RELIEF AS PART OF UK ESTATE PLANNING REVIEW

Undertaking a broad review of a client’s inheritance tax and estate planning, including advising on the availability of private principal residence relief following the purchase of additional UK property and the interaction with Stamp Duty Land Tax. Further advice concerned applicability of multiple dwellings relief and amendment to a previously filed SDLT claim.

ADVISING ON TAX TREATMENT OF DISTRIBUTION FROM US TRUST

Advising a client on the UK tax treatment of receiving a multi-million pound gift from their father that originated from a multi-generational US family trust, including taking advantage of the temporary repatriation facility being introduced by the UK government from 6 April 2025.  Further advised on the implementation of the planning option, including coordination of the gift and ongoing work with the client’s UK and US accountants.

HMRC ENQUIRY INTO AVAILABILITY OF APR AND BPR FOR AGRICULTURAL TRUST

Acting for trustees of a large agricultural trust to successfully defend the Trust’s claim for agricultural property relief and business property relief following a HMRC enquiry into the Trust’s ten-year anniversary charge.

SUCCESSFULLY CHALLENGING HMRC’S DECISION TO CHARGE PENLATIES FOLLOWING LATE FILING OF HISTORIC TAX RETURNS

Successfully appealing a previous HMRC decision that denied our client the ability claim ‘reasonable excuse’ for late filing of historic tax returns in respect of foreign rental income.  The decision resulted in a reduction of penalties and limited the assessment period such that our client received an overpayment of tax paid.

WILLS AND ESTATE PLANNING FOR HIGH NET WORTH FAMILY

Advising a high-net worth individual on his UK estate planning in advance of setting up a family investment company.  Prepared tax efficient Wills and Lasting Powers of Attorney for the client and his wider family in order to ensure the preservation of wealth across generations.
